ABMB: The Winter Rendez-vous of the International Artworld
From December 4 through 7, 2008, Miami Beach, Florida, USA, will be home to the 7th edition of Art Basel Miami Beach, the celebrated international art show. More than 240 leading galleries from the USA, Canada, Europe, Latin America, and Asia will be taking part. Chosen by the Art Basel Miami Beach Selection Committee from more than 800 applicants, the galleries – which include 25 new participants – will be showing works by over 2,000 artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Special sectors are devoted to very recent artworks, curated exhibitions, video- and sound-based works, performances, open air cinema, and art in public spaces. 20 young galleries will present cutting-edge projects in converted shipping containers on the beach, while another 20 exhibit in an experimental collaborative space.
The Art Basel Conversations panels will again feature prominent artworld personalities, while the more intimate format of Art Salon gives leading figures from the international art scene an opportunity to present their projects. Visitors can also look forward to an exciting program of special exhibitions, visits to private art collections, and crossover events linking art with music, film, architecture, and design. The museums and collections of South Florida have also scheduled impressive exhibitions.

Launched in 2002, Art Basel Miami Beach takes place in Miami Beach, Florida (USA), this year from December 4 through 7, 2008. On the eve of the opening, invited guests from around the world will attend the prestigious Vernissage. During the show’s five-day run, more than 40,000 art lovers are expected to visit the international art show, where selected galleries from 30 countries will be showcasing paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, photography, editions, and videos. Its list of participants makes Art Basel Miami Beach the most prestigious art show of the Americas for 20th-century classics and contemporary art. Prices start at a few hundred dollars for multiples and works by young artists, then soar into the millions for museum-quality masterpieces. The full list of exhibitors can be found at www.artbaselmiamibeach.com.
Art Galleries
With over 800 applicants to choose from, including 99 percent of last year’s participants, the Selection Committee – comprised of renowned international gallerists – has picked more than 240 galleries for this year’s show. About half of the exhibitors come from outside the United States, with strong participation from Europe and Latin America, plus a number of galleries from Asia. The following galleries are exhibiting for the first time or returning to the Art Galleries sector after a brief hiatus: Air de Paris (Paris), Greenberg van Doren Gallery (New York), and Eleni Koroneou Gallery (Athens).
Art Nova
In this year’s Art Nova sector, 58 emerging and established galleries from 21 countries present new works, by a maximum of three artists. Recent pieces by more than 150 artists are on display, providing visitors with a platform for discovering pieces fresh from artist studios around the globe, and making the sector an ideal place to spot new artistic tendencies.
Art Supernova
Art Supernova features 20 galleries – from Canada, Colombia, Denmark, Dubai, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, India, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, and the United States – presenting new works by their artists in an experimental group show format. Instead of each gallery having its own separate booth, the exhibitors in Art Supernova have interconnected exhibition spaces and a common storage area. In these shared facilities they present works on paper, videos, performances, artist files, books, and catalogs.
Art Positions
Art Positions is a beachfront array of shipping containers converted into mobile art spaces. Out of 120 applications submitted, the Selection Committee has chosen 20 young galleries from 9 different countries to showcase cutting-edge projects in an open exhibition area.
Art Kabinett
Art Kabinett gives the participating galleries in the Art Galleries sector an opportunity to present small curated exhibitions. The projects, chosen by the Selection Committee, will be shown in a separately delineated space within the gallery's booth. The exhibition concepts for Art Kabinett are diverse, ranging from thematic group exhibitions to one-person historic shows to showcases for rising stars.
Art Projects
Art Projects features projects by internationally renowned artists, selected from proposals by the galleries of Art Basel Miami Beach and installed in the outdoor public spaces of Miami Beach. These works engage directly with the spectator, interrupting the daily routine of passersby in poetic, alienating, and surprising ways.
Art Basel Conversations
Fostering direct encounters with leading personalities from the world of art, the Art Basel Conversations program offers privileged access to first-hand information on aspects of collecting and exhibiting art. Art Basel Conversations is a forum encouraging the exchange of ideas by means of panel discussions and personal contact with the panelists. Participants include prominent artists, art collectors, and critics. Discussing their experiences and the challenges they face, they provide an insider’s view of the art scene.
Art Salon
Art Salon is a platform for discussion by protagonists presenting their projects with an emphasis on current themes in contemporary art. Informal in format but international in scope, it also features book launches, artist talks, roundtable discussions, and lectures. Art Salon will be running in the Art Guest Lounge.
Art Video Lounge
Curated every year by a different expert in the field, the Art Video Lounge sited in the Botanical Garden offers interested visitors a platform to discover more about the ever-evolving field of artistic practice.
Art Sound Lounge
Art Sound Lounge at Art Basel Miami Beach gives visitors the opportunity to enjoy music and audio pieces in the verdant surroundings of the Miami Beach Botanical Garden. Listeners are provided with a personal sound system to use as they stroll through the Floridian flora.
Museums and Private Collections
Once again, Miami’s leading private collections – among them the Margulies Collection, the Rubell Family Collection, CIFO, the private collection of Ella Cisneros, the de la Cruz Collection, the Mora Collection, the Scholl Collection, the Shack Collection, and the Robins Collection – will be opening their homes and warehouses to guests of the international art show. The museums of South Florida, too, will be staging important exhibitions to coincide with Art Basel Miami Beach, including Yinka Shonibare at the Miami Art Museum; Anri Sala at the Museum of Contemporary Art; Possibility of an Island (Mungo Thomson, Peter Coffin, and others) at MOCA at the Goldman Warehouse; and American Streamlined Designed: The World of Tomorrow at The Wolfsonian-FIU.
