Gallery Information |
Acquavella Galleries was founded in 1921 by Nicholas Acquavella. The original focus of the gallery was Old Master paintings, specializing in Italian Renaissance and Baroque works. After 1947 the gallery began dealing in Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works. By 1959 the gallery had moved almost exclusively into the 19th and 20th centuries, specializing in Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Cubism, and Surrealism. Also at that time Mr. William Acquavella, the current owner and director, joined the gallery. In 1967, Acquavella purchased the 18 East 79th Street townhouse, where the gallery is presently located. In 1973, the gallery expanded its horizons by adding postwar American art to its areas of specialization. At the present time, Acquavella is the worldwide agent for Lucian Freud and James Rosenquist, and has organized important exhibitions of significant artists including:
Millares, Monet, Degas, Cézanne, Sisley, Renoir, Pissarro, Modigliani, Bonnard, Miró, Tanguy, Léger, Picasso, Matisse, Caro, Rauschenberg, and Giacometti.
